Age groups

The right introduction at every age

Ages 7–10

Fun-focused sessions using foam and plastic training equipment, basic footwork games and safety habits.

Ages 11–14

Structured group lessons in foil, épée or sabre, with an emphasis on technique, rules and friendly bouting.

Ages 15–18

Competitive training, provincial KZN events and preparation for national age-group championships.

Bringing fencing to KZN schools

Fencing KZN works with schools and community organisations to introduce the sport to young people who may never otherwise have held a fencing weapon. From single demonstration days to ongoing school programmes, we create pathways for children across the province.

Common questions about kids' fencing

What age can my child start fencing in KwaZulu-Natal?+
Most Fencing KZN clubs welcome children from around 7–8 years old. There is no upper age limit.
Is fencing safe for kids?+
Yes. Fencing is one of the safest sports. Children wear certified masks, jackets, gloves and plastrons; blades are flexible and blunted; and coaches enforce strict safety protocols.
Where can my child learn fencing in KZN?+
Fencing KZN has affiliated clubs and school programmes across KwaZulu-Natal, including Durban, Hillcrest, Chatsworth, Durban North and Pietermaritzburg.
Does my child need to be sporty or competitive?+
Not at all. Fencing suits children of all fitness levels. Many start for fun and gradually develop a love for the challenge.
What equipment does my child need?+
Clubs provide loan equipment for beginners. Once your child commits, coaches will guide you on correctly sized mask, jacket, glove and weapon.
