Arena Park Secondary Makes History in Fencing KZN Transformation Project
Arena Park Secondary's fencing debut at the Clay Group KZN Ranking 3 Competition yielded four bronze medals — a landmark moment for the Chatsworth development programme.
Chatsworth, KwaZulu-Natal — Just six months ago, Fencing KZN embarked on a simple but ambitious mission: to introduce the Olympic sport of fencing to new and diverse communities across KwaZulu-Natal. That journey began at Arena Park Secondary School in Chatsworth, and the results are already exceeding expectations.
On Sunday, 26 July 2026, Arena Park Secondary made history by competing as a club for the first time at the Clay Group KZN Ranking 3 Competition, held at the Nelson Mandela Community Youth Centre.
Despite receiving professional coaching only once a month, having limited access to fencing equipment, and not yet training as full-time club athletes, the young fencers delivered an outstanding performance, returning home with four bronze medals.

For a school making its competitive debut, winning four medals is an extraordinary achievement. More importantly, these results demonstrate that sporting talent exists in every community when young people are given access to opportunities, quality coaching, and the chance to compete.
The Arena Park initiative forms part of Fencing KZN's broader transformation programme, which aims to remove barriers to participation and introduce fencing into schools and communities where the sport has traditionally had little presence.
The success of Arena Park Secondary highlights the tremendous potential that exists within Chatsworth. These results demonstrate that the area is home to an incredible depth of untapped sporting talent and that, with continued investment and structured coaching, Chatsworth has the potential to become a significant contributor to the growth of fencing in KwaZulu-Natal.
A major coaching boost
Looking ahead, Arena Park Secondary's programme will receive a major boost with Coach Pheto Mashiane leading its coaching programme.
Coach Mashiane is the former Head Coach of the University of Limpopo and holds an International Coaching Diploma awarded by the Fédération Internationale d'Escrime (FIE), the international governing body for the sport of fencing. His coaching career includes serving as an assistant coach at Tyshler Fencing School in Gauteng. He also worked with South African Olympic fencer Sello Maduma, where he coached beginner and high-performance athletes at the Sello Maduma Fencing Academy in Limpopo.
His appointment represents a significant milestone for the Arena Park programme and reflects Fencing KZN's long-term commitment to developing sustainable fencing opportunities within the Chatsworth community.
